Matthew 18: 1-5| King James Audio Bible | KJV | King James Version

Dear God,

I’m coming to you today to talk about something important to me—my feelings and my mind. Sometimes, I feel sad, worried, or confused, and I need your help. I know that you understand me completely.

Please remind me that it’s okay to ask for help when I need it. Just like I go to a doctor when I’m sick, I can also talk to someone when I’m feeling down or when my thoughts are bothering me. It doesn’t mean I’m weak; it means I’m brave enough to get the help I need.

Sometimes, people might not understand or might make me feel embarrassed about my feelings, but I know that you always love and accept me just the way I am. Help me find the courage to reach out to someone I trust—a parent, a teacher, a friend, or a counsellor—who can support me and listen to what I’m going through.

Thank you, God, for being there for me and for giving me the strength to seek help. I trust in your love and guidance as I journey toward healing and growth.

In your loving name, I pray.

Amen.

As adult children called to become like little children in the eyes of Jesus, we often face unique obstacles when it comes to asking for help. Pride and shame can hinder us, leading us to believe that seeking assistance is a sign of weakness. Society often expects us to embody resilience and self-control, making it difficult to acknowledge our vulnerability and admit that we need support.

How Might We Acknowledge Vulnerability? | Meditations On The Love Of Jesus Christ

In our journey through life, we experience moments of vulnerability and encounter our limitations. It is an inherent part of our human existence. Despite the masks we wear and the façade of strength we often project, deep down, we know that there are times when we cannot face life’s challenges alone.

Jesus called us to become like children. He recognized the beauty and power of embracing humility, for it is through humility that we open ourselves to the healing grace of God and find entrance into the kingdom of heaven. In a world that celebrates self-sufficiency and individualism, Jesus reminds us that there is strength in acknowledging need for help.

Despite these teachings, many of us find it challenging to ask for help. We fear being perceived as weak or incapable. We worry about burdening others or appearing inadequate. Pride whispers in our ears, convincing us that we should be able to handle everything on our own. This is the devil speaking and this self-imposed isolation can lead to a heavier burden than we can bear.

One write: ‘Not too long ago, I found myself overwhelmed by the weight of my own worries and anxieties. The world closed in around me, and I felt suffocated by the weight of my expectations.

‘I understood that my reluctance to ask for help was not a sign of strength but rather a manifestation of pride and a barrier to healing. I recognized that true strength lies in vulnerability, in acknowledging our limitations, and in reaching out to those who can offer support and guidance.

‘I discovered the transformative power of seeking help. I discovered that in opening myself up to the compassion and understanding of others, I could find the solace and encouragement I so desperately needed. I realized that in asking for help, I was not burdening others, but rather inviting into a space of shared humanity, where empathy and support can thrive.’

Jesus said in Matthew 18:3: ‘Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.’ (KJV) These words of Jesus invite us to shed the facade of self-reliance and embrace the childlike qualities of trust, dependence, and humility. In the eyes of God, we are all His children, and it is in embracing this identity that we find the strength to seek the help we need.

Prayers For Adult Children | Overcoming Stigma and Shame | Meditations On The Love Of Jesus Christ

In our society, there are societal and cultural factors that discourage individuals from seeking help for their mental health. Stigma and shame cast a shadow over path to healing, making it difficult for people to reach out and ask for assistance. However, it is crucial to address and to break down these barriers, creating an environment of acceptance and understanding.

The teachings of Jesus remind us of the importance of breaking down barriers and embracing all individuals with love and compassion. In Mark 2:17, Jesus says, ‘They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.’ (KJV) These words demonstrate Jesus’ inclusive approach, reaching out to those in need and offering healing. In following Jesus’ example, we are called to create an environment where seeking help is met with empathy and support rather than judgment.

Pope Francis addresses the stigma surrounding mental health issues and emphasizes the need for a culture of acceptance and understanding. He reminds us that ‘mental health is an integral part of the person, and should be cared for as such’ (Address to Conference on Mental Health, November 30, 2017).

Overcoming stigma and shame also requires that we cultivate compassion and empathy within ourselves. We must recognize that mental health struggles are not a sign of weakness or failure but a part of the human experience. Each person’s journey is unique, and we must be willing to listen without judgment, offering a supportive presence and a safe space for them to share their struggles.

Creating this culture of acceptance and understanding involves education and raising awareness about mental health. We can engage in open conversations, dispelling myths and misconceptions, and fostering a more accurate understanding of mental health issues. By sharing personal stories and experiences, we can humanize the challenges faced by individuals seeking help, helping others to see that seeking assistance is a courageous act, not something to be ashamed of.

Prayers For Adult Children | Seeking Help In Scripture

In the sacred texts of Scripture, we find numerous stories that illustrate the act of seeking help. These stories not only provide us with guidance and inspiration but also remind us that seeking support and healing is a deeply rooted aspect of our human experience.

One powerful story is the parable of the prodigal son found in Luke 15:11-32. In this parable, we witness a son who, after squandering his inheritance and finding himself in desperate circumstances, humbly returns to his father, acknowledging his need for help and forgiveness. The father, representing God’s unconditional love and mercy, welcomes his son with open arms and celebrates his return. This parable teaches us that no matter how far we may have strayed or how deeply we may have fallen, God is always ready to receive us when we seek His help.

Another narrative that highlights the importance of seeking help is the healing of the blind man in Mark 10:46-52. In this account, the blind man, Bartimaeus, recognizes his own limitations and cries out to Jesus for mercy. Despite the discouragement from those around him, he persists in seeking Jesus’ assistance. Jesus, moved by his faith and persistence, restores the blind man’s sight. This story reminds us that when we recognize our need for help and approach Jesus with faith, Jesus responds with compassion and healing.

In times of distress and difficulty, the Psalms offer solace and guidance. Psalm 34:17-18 states: ‘The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.’ (KJV) These verses assure us that when we cry out to the Lord in our times of need, He hears us and delivers us from our troubles. The Psalms teach us that seeking God’s help is not a sign of weakness but an act of faith, and He responds with love and comfort.

Faith in Seeking Help | Prayer With Jesus | Meditations On The Love Of Jesus Christ

Faith plays a vital role in our journey of seeking help for our mental health. It is through our faith that we find solace, strength, and hope in the face of challenges. Jesus, in his teachings, invites us to cast our burdens upon him and find rest in his grace.

The words of Jesus in Matthew 11:28-30 resonate deeply with those who are burdened and in need of assistance: ‘Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.’ (KJV) These words convey the invitation of Jesus to lay our burdens at Jesus’ feet and find comfort in his loving embrace. It is through our faith in Jesus that we discover a source of strength that surpasses our own abilities.

In times of distress, prayer becomes a vital aspect of our faith. Pope Benedict XVI affirms the importance of prayer in seeking help, stating that ‘prayer is, in fact, the main path for a journey of faith, a school of dialogue with God’ (General Audience, March 15, 2006). Through prayer, we establish a direct line of communication with God, sharing our thoughts, fears, and needs. It is in this dialogue with Him that we find comfort, clarity, and a renewed sense of hope.

Trusting in God’s providence is another fundamental aspect of faith. We are called to surrender our worries and anxieties to God, trusting that He will provide for our needs. As Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:25-27, ‘Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?’ (KJV) These words reassure us of God’s care and remind us that when we seek His help, He will provide for us in ways that exceed our expectations.

Our faith in seeking help extends beyond our personal relationship with God. It also involves trusting in the resources and support systems that He has placed in our lives. It means recognizing the importance of professional assistance, counselling, therapy, and the loving presence of supportive communities. Our faith empowers us to embrace these avenues of help, knowing that God works through them to bring healing and restoration.

Embracing Healing and Growth | Meditations On The Love Of Jesus Christ

Embracing healing and growth is a transformative journey that begins with seeking help and extends to our commitment to personal well-being. As we navigate the challenges of mental health, we are called to embrace vulnerability, confront our fears, and trust in the transformative power of seeking help.

Seeking help for our mental health challenges opens the door to healing. It requires us to acknowledge our vulnerabilities, confront our limitations, and surrender our pride. In doing so, we create space for healing to take place. The words of Jesus in Mark 2:17 remind us of the purpose of seeking help: ‘They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.’ (KJV) Just as a physician attends to the needs of the sick, seeking help acknowledges our need for healing and restoration.

Pope Francis emphasizes the importance of embracing the process of healing, stating that ‘God does not approach us with judgment, but with a promise of healing’ (Address, June 3, 2013). It is through seeking help that we open ourselves to the healing grace of God, who walks with us on our journey of growth.

Healing and growth often require the support of professionals such as therapists, counsellors, and psychiatrists. These individuals possess the knowledge and expertise to guide us through our struggles, providing valuable insights and tools for recovery.

As we engage in the process of healing, we must also cultivate self-compassion. We need to extend kindness, understanding, and forgiveness to ourselves as we navigate the complexities of our mental health challenges. Recognizing that we are worthy of love and care is crucial to our healing and growth.

The journey of healing and growth extends beyond the individual level. It involves actively participating in supportive communities and engaging in activities that nourish our well-being. This may include engaging in self-care practices, pursuing hobbies and passions, and establishing healthy boundaries in our relationships. By embracing these aspects, we create an environment that nurtures our healing and promotes our growth.

The Scriptures remind us of the transformative power of seeking help and embracing healing. In Isaiah 41:10, we find encouragement: ‘Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness’ (KJV). These words assure us of God’s presence and His willingness to strengthen and uphold us in our journey toward healing and growth.
