Genesis 18:1-15 | King James Audio Bible | Powerful Prayer

‘And the LORD appeared unto him [Abraham] in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day; And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground, And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant: Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree: And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said. And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth. And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetcht a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it. And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat. And they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent. And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age, and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also? And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old? Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son. Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.’ (Genesis 18:1-15, KJV)

Explanation of Context | Angelic Announcements To Sarah And Abraham | Love Revealed By Jesus Christ

In this passage, the Lord appeared to Abraham in the plains of Mamre in the form of three men. Recognizing their divine nature, Abraham warmly welcomed them into his home and showed great hospitality. The Lord informed Abraham that He would soon return to him, and shared the news that Sarah, Abraham’s elderly wife, would conceive and bear a son. Sarah, who overheard the announcement from inside the tent, laughed in disbelief, considering her advanced age. The Lord gently confronted her doubts and affirmed that nothing is impossible for Him.

Reflection – Trusting God’s Promises Beyond Human Understanding | Meditations On The Love Of Jesus Christ

The angelic announcement to Sarah and Abraham reminds us of God’s faithfulness to His promises, even when circumstances seem impossible or beyond human understanding. Despite their old age, the Lord assured Abraham and Sarah that they would become parents of a son. Though Sarah initially laughed in doubt, God’s response affirmed His ability to fulfil His word. God reminds us that His power transcends human limitations.

In our lives, we face situations that appear insurmountable, leading us to doubt God’s promises. However, this passage encourages us to trust in God’s sovereignty and acknowledge that nothing is too difficult for Him. God’s plans and timings are perfect, and God remains faithful to fulfil what He has spoken.

When God’s promises seem improbable, let not doubt consume us. As Sarah conceived and bore a son, God’s promises will come to fruition in our lives.

Powerful Prayer to Jesus | Love Revealed By Jesus Christ

Dear Jesus,

In doubt and uncertainty, we come to you. You sent the angel to announce the miraculous birth of Isaac to Sarah and Abraham. We trust your good plans for each of us.

When doubt and disbelief creep into our hearts, strengthen our faith and trust in your promises. May we find hope and assurance in your unfailing love and power to bring about what you have spoken.

Like Sarah, we may struggle to understand how your promises can come to pass in our lives. Grant us the grace to surrender our doubts to you, knowing that your wisdom surpasses our understanding.

Teach us to be patient and steadfast in waiting for your perfect timing. Just as you fulfilled your promise to Sarah and Abraham, we believe that your word will be accomplished in our lives as well.

Thank You, Jesus.

In your precious name, I pray.

Amen.

  • Audio Bible | KJV Psalm | My God | Forsaken Me | Oliver Peers

Jesus references this psalm when he is on the Cross. ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me.’ It is possible to read this utterance of the psalm as an act of despair. Certainly we might know of Jesus’ agony as he was crucified. We can only wonder at Jesus’ agony on the Cross. There are so many possible layers of the meaning here. At once, this utterance might seem to us an action of despair, or perhaps better of nullity, and at the same time an action of triumph, as the psalm moves to reaffirm and reinforces faith in God. The psalmist is abject. In a sense, he complains against God. He speaks of trust, and yet says that God does not answer. The psalmist considers his state – as a worm, scorned by men, mocked by men – the cause of God seems broken and lost. There is a deep and prolonged itemization of the physical poverty of the psalmist. Truly, this is a person at the most abject. Starving, dogs are set to prey on him. This is truth: the affirmation thereby of God-fear and God-love. This is Jesus. Jesus speaks to teach us how to pray through the psalms. This is a most important text – chosen by Jesus upon the Cross. We cannot assume irony. We cannot say that Jesus on the Cross recited this psalm as if having given up on his mission. We can only say that Jesus’s recitation of this psalm was perfect and that it was intended to express perfection. This is Christian prayer at the utmost. So much is fused. Jesus calls upon the Father – on the Cross. SO much of Jewish history is included and resolved. Jesus took so much upon himself. Jesus became the subject of these psalms. That is scary and that is triumph. There is a sense in which this should be Christian prayer.
