The Gospel of Saint John | The Last Supper

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

The Priestly Prayer of Jesus concludes the discourse of the Last Supper. Immediately afterwards, Jesus will be arrested, betrayed. Jesus prays to his Father in a very moving way. He offers to the Father the imminent sacrifice of himself, praying that his sacrifice may be acceptable to the Father, that his holy human nature may be glorified. Jesus’ prayer is spoken aloud, so that his disciples and we also may receive his last testament, as Jesus intercedes on our behalf with the Father.

The Priestly Prayer of Jesus is a powerful and moving passage that provides insight into the mind and heart of Jesus as he is about to face his arrest and crucifixion. In this prayer, Jesus is recorded as asking the Father to unite all believers, to protect them from the evil one, and to sanctify them through the truth. He also prays for the continuation of the mission that he started, through the apostles and through those who will come to believe in him through their message [ … read more … ]

The three synoptic Gospels tell us of this episode of Jesus’ life, when he returned home to Nazareth and preached in the synagogue there. Luke’s Gospel gives us the text of Isaiah read by Jesus, in which Jesus’ announces his messianic mission – to bring the good news to the poor, to live and to identify with the poor, to heal us and set us at liberty from sin. As Jesus closes the book, he omits the following from Isaiah 61: 2: ‘…and the day of vengeance of our God.’ This is deliberate interruption. Jesus is not come to maintain old enmities. Jesus’ way is peace. It is the people of all the world who are to be blessed in Christ [ … ]

  • George Herbert | The Temple | Affliction

The poem explores relationship between human grief and divine presence. The poem opens with an image of the heart heaving, which leads Herbert to recognize God’s role in guiding sorrow. This recognition transforms grief from chaos into something governed. The rod of suffering becomes a scepter, suggesting authority and purpose in the experience of pain. Without God’s involvement, Herbert believes his grief would have overwhelmed him entirely [ … ]

By now, and at such an early stage in Jesus’ ministry, the Jewish religious establishment is coming to fear and to hate Jesus. The Pharisees watch him, like malign, predatory spirits, looking to see fault and ready to pounce on any incriminating evidence. They have already closed their hearts against Jesus. To the Pharisees, Jesus represents a threat – to their own prestige – and an affront to their religious dogmas [ … ]
