Matthew 6: 19-21 | King James Audio Bible | KJV | King James Version

‘Thou shalt not steal.’

The commandment forbids taking what rightfully belongs to someone else without their permission or through dishonest means. Stealing includes actions such as theft, robbery, fraud or any form of dishonest acquisition. God’s commandment promotes fairness, justice and the well-being of society. It recognizes inherent value and dignity of every individual, and tells us to treat others with honesty, integrity, and respect.

Ten Commandments In The Light Of Jesus Christ | Meditations On The Love Of Jesus Christ

Jesus’ teachings often challenged the worldly values and materialistic mindset prevalent in society. Jesus emphasized the importance of prioritizing eternal treasures over earthly possessions. One notable interaction occurred when a rich young ruler approached Jesus and asked what he must do to inherit eternal life (Mark 10:17-22, KJV).

In response, Jesus told him to sell all his possessions, give the proceeds to the poor, and follow him. This encounter highlights Jesus’ call to let go of the love of worldly wealth and to embrace a selfless and generous lifestyle. While the rich young ruler struggled with this command, Jesus used it as an opportunity to teach the disciples about the challenges of materialism and the rewards of sacrificial living.

Furthermore, Jesus highlighted the significance of giving to the poor in the parable of the sheep and goats (Matthew 25:31-46, KJV). In this passage, Jesus speaks of the final judgment, where he separates the righteous from the unrighteous based on their acts of kindness and compassion towards those in need. Jesus emphasizes that when we care for the hungry, thirsty, naked, and marginalized, we are serving him.

These moments from Jesus’ ministry remind us that our possessions are not meant to be hoarded or used solely for personal gain. Rather, they are to be seen as resources entrusted to us by God, to be stewarded for the betterment of others and the advancement of God’s kingdom.

While not everyone is called to sell all their possessions, Jesus’ teachings encourage us to have open hands and a generous spirit. It reminds us to be attentive to the needs of the poor and marginalized, offering our resources, time, and talents in service to them. Our possessions should never become a stumbling block to loving and caring for our fellow human beings.

‘Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.’ (Matthew 6:19-20, KJV)

  • Prayer | Jesus And A Child | Love Revealed By Jesus Christ | Christianity

The poem is a meditation on the nature of prayer. It is a sonnet with no narrative or direct progression, composed of sixteen images, each evoking different dimensions of prayer. There is no main verb in the poem; it flows as a series of phrases that describe prayer without explicitly saying what it does. A list of metaphors feels simultaneously boundless and encompassing, as Herbert seeks to communicate prayer’s role, impact, and place within the human and divine realms [ … ]

Jesus tells us that, from the beginning, a man and a woman joined in marriage would become one flesh. There is this complementarity of man and woman in sexual union. Divorce marks a falling away from God’s intentions for men and women in marriage. It is an aberration, a failure of docility before God. Jesus tells us that Moses’ command (see Deuteronomy 24:1) was because of the hardness of people’s hearts in rejecting  God’s initial ordering of male and female sexual relations. Indeed, it can be seen as a liberal command, protective of women, in that it required the husband to write out a certificate of divorce, freeing the woman rather than merely excluding and rejecting her. There is no real trap here for Jesus, as the Pharisees tempt him; God’s creation of man and woman to become one flesh in marriage remains truth [ … ]

  • Psalm 80 KJV | King James Audio Bible | Word Aloud | Oliver Peers

Psalm 80 pleas for divine intervention and restoration, resonating with themes of lamentation and supplication. Addressed to the Shepherd of Israel, who leads His people as a flock, the psalmist beseeches God to shine forth and save God’s people from their distress. The psalm is a poignant reflection on the people’s perceived abandonment, a plea for mercy, and a fervent desire for God’s favour to be restored. As the psalmist yearns for divine presence, the overarching theme becomes a prayerful request for God to turn His countenance towards His people, reviving them with God’s saving grace [ … ]
