John 10: 22-30 | King James Audio Bible | KJV | King James Version

‘I am the Lord your God. You shall not have strange gods before me.’

This commandment emphasizes the exclusivity of the relationship between God and His people. It calls for undivided loyalty and devotion to the one true God, acknowledging His authority and supremacy over all false deities or worldly pursuits. This includes fetishization of material wealth – the love of money. Christians are called to place our trust in God and not in vanity.

Ten Commandments In The Light Of Jesus | Meditations On The Love Of Jesus Christ

Jesus, as the Son of God, perfectly embodied the essence of this commandment. He lived in complete submission and obedience to his heavenly Father, never allowing anything or anyone to come before God’s will and purpose for his life. Jesus declared, ‘I and the Father are one’ (John 10:30, KJV), emphasizing Jesus’ unity with God and unwavering devotion to Him.

In the light of Jesus, we understand that having no other gods before God goes beyond mere external worship. It involves the condition of our hearts and the priorities we set in our lives. Jesus taught that God deserves our wholehearted love, commitment, and allegiance. Jesus challenged his followers to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33), recognizing that everything else pales in comparison to the supreme worth and glory of God.

Moreover, Jesus revealed that true worship is not limited to a specific location or ritual, but it is rooted in spirit and truth (John 4:23-24). Through his life, death, and resurrection, Jesus opened the way for all people to enter into a personal relationship with God. Jesus became the bridge that enables us to approach God directly and worship Him with sincerity and authenticity.

Therefore, in the light of Jesus, the first commandment invites Christians to examine our lives and priorities. It challenges us to evaluate whether we have allowed other things—such as material possessions, relationships, or personal ambitions—to take the place of God in our hearts. It calls us to surrender our desires, ambitions, and even our fears to God, trusting Him as the ultimate source of meaning, purpose, and fulfillment.

By embracing Jesus’ teachings and following his example, we can continually align our lives with the truth of the first commandment. In doing so, we honour God as our Lord and King, recognizing His supreme authority and allowing Him to reign in every area of our lives.

Prayer To Jesus | Love Revealed By Jesus Christ

Lord Jesus, thank you for revealing the truth of the first commandment to me. Help me to recognize and renounce anything that takes priority over my relationship with you. Grant me the grace to love you with all my heart, soul, and mind, and to faithfully follow you as my one true God. In your holy name, I pray. Amen.

  • Audio Bible | Epiphany | Gospel Matthew | 3 Kings | Three Wise Men

The Epiphany is an extraordinary event in the Bible, whereby we hear of the gift and revelation of Christ to all mankind. The three wise men have long studied the heavens; they have been looking for signs, for truths to guide them. They are of the east, of the orient, not of the Jewish people. They have seen the new star that is there to signify Christ and have come on pilgrimage to seek, to find and to worship Jesus [ … ]

  • Jesus On The Cross | Prayer And Crucifixion | Our God Prays With Us | Lent | Jesus Crucified

In his commentary on the psalms, Saint Augustine invites us to reflect on the nature of prayer in the light of the Incarnation. Christ, he says, prays for us, prays in us, and is the one to whom we pray. This threefold pattern expresses the deep mystery of how Christ, as both God and man, draws us into communion with the Father. At the centre of Augustine’s reflection is the conviction that Christ is inseparably united to his Church. Christ is the Head; the Church is his Body. Together, they form one person, what Augustine elsewhere calls the Totus Christus – the whole Christ. This means that the voice of the Church in prayer is the voice of Christ; and the voice of Christ, especially in the Psalms, is the voice of his Body. We speak to God in him, and he speaks to God in us [ … ]

  • Audio Bible | The Sermon on the Mount | The Beatitudes

The Beatitudes form our gateway to the Sermon on the Mount, the first of the great five discourses which are recounted in Matthew’s Gospel, and a beautiful invitation to be with Jesus, a programme by which we may live a Christian life. Moses ascended a mountain to be with God and to bring the Law back to the people. Now Jesus ascends this mountain and draws the people with him, both his disciples and the multitude, and here he reforms and brings new life to the Law, teaching with authority as only he can [ … ]
