Matthew’s Gospel 1:18-25 King James Audio Bible | Audio Bible KJV | King James Version

For centuries, Christians have turned to Saint Joseph, earthly father of Jesus Christ, in prayer and devotion for intercession, seeking Saint Joseph’ guidance, protection, and assistance in our spiritual lives. The Bible attests to the qualities of Saint Joseph that Christians admire and revere, including his deep faith, humility, and holiness.

The Gospel of Matthew tells us of the moment when Saint Joseph discovered that Mary, his betrothed, was pregnant. At first, Saint Joseph planned to divorce her quietly, but an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and revealed the truth of Mary’s pregnancy. In response, Saint Joseph showed great faith and obedience, taking Mary into his home and raising Jesus as his own son. Matthew 1:20-21 reads:

‘But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.’

Throughout history, Christians have admired and revered Saint Joseph for his devotion to God and his steadfastness in the face of uncertainty. The early Christian writer Origen wrote of Saint Joseph, ‘The just man was chosen by God to be the guardian of His most precious treasures, namely His Son and His spouse.’ (Homilies on St. Luke) In the Middle Ages, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux praised Saint Joseph for his humility, saying, ‘It was not in vain that this just man was chosen to be the spouse of Mary, to be the foster-father of Jesus, and to be the patron of the universal Church.’ (Sermon 2 on the Nativity of the Lord)

Today, many Christians continue to turn to Saint Joseph in prayer and devotion, seeking his intercession for our needs and intentions. Pope Francis has spoken of his own devotion to Saint Joseph, saying, ‘In my life, I have always felt the protection of Saint Joseph, and I have learned to love him very much.’ (Homily, March 19, 2013)

Saint Joseph’s role as a model of faith and humility is further highlighted in the Gospel of Luke, where he and Mary take the infant Jesus to the Temple to present Jesus to the Lord. There, they meet the prophet Simeon, who blesses them and prophesies about the child’s future. Luke 2:29-32 reads:

‘Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.’

Simeon’s words affirm the significance of Jesus’ birth, and by extension, the role that Saint Joseph played in fulfilling God’s plan for salvation. It is in this spirit that many Christians believe that Saint Joseph is a powerful intercessor, and that praying to Saint Joseph can bring blessings and favours from God.

Saint Joseph’s faithfulness and devotion can be seen in the Flight into Egypt, when he and Mary flee with the infant Jesus to escape Herod’s murderous decree. This event is recorded in the Gospel of Matthew, which reads:

‘And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.’ (Matthew 2:13)

Saint Joseph’s willingness to follow the Lord’s guidance, even in the face of danger and uncertainty, is a testament to his faith and trust in God. It is this unwavering devotion that has made him a beloved figure in the Christian tradition, and a source of inspiration for many.

In addition to his role as a model of faith and devotion, Saint Joseph is also revered for his humble service to Jesus and Mary. As the protector and provider for the Holy Family, Saint Joseph set an example for Christians of selfless love and sacrifice. As Pope John Paul II wrote in his apostolic exhortation Redemptoris Custos (Guardian of the Redeemer), ‘Saint Joseph was called by God to serve the person and mission of Jesus directly through the exercise of his fatherhood.’ (Paragraph 8)

In times of uncertainty and difficulty, Saint Joseph can be a source of comfort and inspiration for Christians. As Pope Pius XII wrote in his encyclical, On Devotion To Saint Joseph, Saint Joseph ‘is the model of those humble ones that Christianity raises up to great destinies.’ (Paragraph 7) Through Saint Joseph’ intercession, may we come to know and love Jesus Christ more deeply in our lives.

In today’s Bible reading, we see clearly that many of those to whom Mark addresses his Gospel would not be familiar with Jewish customs. Mark, therefore, explains that the Jews wash as a ritual of purification prior to eating. This was initially a prescription for how priests should wash before offering sacrifice – see Exodus 30: 17ff – and was extended by tradition to all Jews before every meal. It may be helpful for us to remember that this was not a matter of hygiene; rather ritual purification was a symbol of the moral purity a person should have when approaching God. We may also consider our own practice of washing our hands and saying grace before meals, such that our participating in a meal becomes an act of thanksgiving to God, the meal a sacred space [ … ]
